Location and layout

It is located in the Herrenkrug district and runs through the Herrenkrugpark . The avenue forms the northern part of Herrenkrugstrasse and ends at the north end in a roundabout formed by Herrenkrug Street . The Herrenkrug Hotel is located northwest of the roundabout .

The avenue, which is laid out in a north-south direction, runs parallel to the Elbe, which flows further west . In the middle of the avenue, which is planted with trees on both sides, is the two-lane Herrenkrugstrasse. A foot and cycle path runs between the rows of trees on the west side, and a single-lane tram line is located on the east side.

On the edge of the avenue are the Graf von Schwerin memorial and the Herrenkrug waiting hall .

history

The path relationship marked today by the avenue originally served as a military road. The traffic from Magdeburg in the direction of the castle was carried over them. At the same time, the path served as a connection from Magdeburg to the Herrenkrug inn at the north end from the 17th century. The area of the inn was then redesigned into the Herrenkrug landscape garden and thus an important place for recreation in Magdeburg. At the beginning of the 19th century, the landscape garden was laid out as a public park. The avenue ran directly towards the Alte Gesellschaftshaus, built as a vanishing point at its northern end in 1843/44 . After the classicist building was torn down at the end of the 1950s, this point is missing or is only occupied by the roundabout and the Herrenkrug Hotel, which is slightly offset to the west.

During the storm "Paul" on June 22, 2017, numerous trees were uprooted from the avenue.

In the local register of monuments , the avenue is listed as a monument under registration number 094 18246 .
