The rule Baldern based on Baldern Castle , today Bopfingen in Baden-Württemberg Ostalbkreis was first mentioned in the year 1153rd

1215 exchanged Bishopric of Regensburg , the rule against other possessions to the abbey Ellwangen . 1250 were lords of Oettingen as stewards of the monastery dominion Baldern to fief . The Oettingen-Baldern line was created when the Oettingen estate was divided up after 1662. In 1798 the line Oettingen-Wallerstein took over the rule.

As part of the mediatization in 1806, the Baldern rule came under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Bavaria and in 1810 through the exchange of territory to the Kingdom of Württemberg .
