Hershel Lewis is a retired American basketball player .

career

Lewis played from 1971 to 1973 at Winona State University in the US state of Minnesota . With 313 assists, the 1.95-meter-tall winger was in first place in the university team's all-time best list at the time of his departure; his record lasted for more than 15 years. In 1973/73 he was named Player of the Year of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) after he had led the NSIC in the same season with a points average of 27.1 per encounter. In February 1973 he scored 38 points in two games within a week.

Lewis, who made it into the preselection of the United States' Olympic team, came to the Federal Republic of Germany as a soldier in the US armed forces and was stationed at a base in Heidelberg. The Heidelberg team became aware of him at a tournament in Belgium . Lewis first accepted the offer of another team, but then strengthened the USC from the twelfth day of the 1976/77 season. He won the German Championship and the DBB Cup with Heidelberg. In the cup finals (first and second leg) against TuS 04 Leverkusen, the American was the best Heidelberg scorer with 33 and 24 points respectively. He was also one of the USC's pillars in the Bundesliga and scored 210 points in the final round of the German championship, which was the sixth-best score in the league. His Heidelberg team-mate Reiner Frontzek (213 points) was just ahead of him. It was Lewis' only year in the Bundesliga.
