Herstory is an EP by American rapper Young MA . It was released on April 27, 2017.

backgrounds

Herstory is Young M.A's first release since its commercial breakthrough in the United States. The EP contains their most successful song to date, the quadruple platinum track Ooouuu , as well as the follow-up single Hot Sauce . The songs of the work were produced by Showtyme on the Beat , FreshBeatz , King James Beats , Land Keyz and NY Bangers , all titles were written by the interpreter herself. Monica appears as the only guest interpreter .

Music and lyrics

Herstory only contains songs that are part of the hip-hop genre. It is noticeable that, unlike the production, which can largely be assigned to the contemporary trap sound , Young M.A's rap style is mainly oriented towards old school hip-hop. There are no distorting effects such as autotune or sung passages, and there is no refrain on four of the seven songs on the EP. Recurring motifs are celebrating with friends (especially with her crew RedLyfe ) and their predominantly sexual relationships with other women.

Cover design

The cover of Herstory shows Young MA wearing a white dressing gown sitting on a wooden chair while she counts a large amount of cash . Under her coat she wears a red top and a necklace with a cross pendant . An open cupboard and a black bag dangling from its handle can be seen in the background .

criticism

Herstory received mostly mixed to generally positive reviews, which could recognize concrete qualities in the artist's music, but were uncertain about the longevity of her career. The aggressive and destructive nature of the interpreter as well as the lack of refrains were emphasized. Compared to other rappers, she wouldn't "shake booties", but rather look like a regular at a strip club herself , who is greeted with a hug by the bouncers . Her old school influences were also noted positively. The hip-hopper would ultimately have more of Nas than of a "mumbling teen with bright red braids" and would attach great importance to her lyrical aspects, which has become rare. Occasionally, however, the small amount of previously unknown material was criticized and it was felt that the artist was trying too hard to emphasize the qualities of the successful single Ooouuu , which was regarded as the highlight of the EP, as well as its successor Hot Sauce , which was also well received by the critics to conjure up again. Compared to these songs, however, the new titles would draw the short straw. In addition, it was not sure whether the musician's "ultra-regional" Brooklyn sound was working for or against her, now that commercial success had pushed her into the international spotlight. On the one hand, it would make part of her charm, but on the other hand it would greatly limit her. While she definitely excels in the field of freestyle rape , some critics expressed doubts as to whether she could convince as a full-fledged studio artist.
