Herta Reich , b. Eisler, (born September 19, 1917 in Mürzzuschlag ; died February 19, 2012 in Jerusalem ) was an Austrian Jewish woman who was one of the few survivors of the Kladovo transport .

Life

Herta Reich was born as the daughter of Ignaz Eisler, a textile merchant in Mürzzuschlag, and his wife Katharina, b. Black, born. She graduated from business school in Vienna and then worked in her father's business. The annexation of Austria to Hitler's Germany forced them to flee in 1938. On this she got on the illegal Jewish refugee transport from Austria to Palestine, which later became known as the Kladovo Transport . Her escape would last six years from 1938 to 1944, during which she met the Polish refugee Romek Reich and married in 1941. In 1944 she was finally able to emigrate to Palestine, where her son, the archaeologist Ronny Reich , was born in 1947 . Her husband died at Ludd's in the first weeks of the War of Independence in July 1948 .

The Graz history association Clio published their experience report Zwei Tage Zeit in 1998 , which was translated into Hebrew by their son in 2009. The work is one of the few reports about the Kladovo transport and describes the fate of that generation of Jewish women who were born in the Styrian province during the monarchy and who grew up in what was, in some cases, a strongly anti-Semitic environment in the 1920s and 1930s.

Honors

After her, on November 23, 2012, the Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Mürzzuschlag was renamed the Herta-Reich-Gymnasium and Realgymnasium.
