The Sacred Heart of Jesus Basilica , also known as Conewago Chapel , is a Roman Catholic church in Conevago near Hanover in Adams County in the US state of Pennsylvania . The Church of the Diocese of Harrisburg is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The oldest stone-built Catholic church building in the United States is listed as a national historic monument.

history

Starting with the first chapel around 1740, the congregation grew to 1,000 members by 1784. Between 1785 and 1787, today's church was built from brownstone , the walls are one meter thick. The approximately 2½-storey high, three-aisled church is divided into five bays . The federal style entrance facade has a semicircular archway and a 25 meter high tower, which was added in 1873. A three-story rectory, which was also built in 1787, adjoins the church. It is the oldest stone-built Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Demetrius Augustinus Gallitzin spent the first years of his priesthood in the Conewago Chapel until 1796.

The church was founded on June 30, 1962 by Pope John XXIII. raised to the rank of minor basilica. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975 .
