The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Roman Catholic church building in Singen (Hohentwiel) .

history

After Singen had received town charter in 1899 and several town buildings were built in the following years, planning began for a large church.

The plans for the Herz-Jesu-Kirche originate in principle from the planning of a neo-Romanesque church in Freiburg, Herdern district. The building planned by construction inspector Raimund Jeblinger could not be realized and was then carried out in Singen, with minor modifications. The foundation stone was laid in 1909. The church was completed and consecrated on September 24, 1911.

The church was initially a branch church of the parish of Peter and Paul. In 1921 it became a church building for the newly established Kuratie Herz-Jesu and in 1934 a parish church for the newly established parish Herz-Jesu .

In a bombing raid at the end of the Second World War, the church windows on the south side of the church were destroyed and the roof was covered.

The church was also affected by two earthquakes. The first occurred before her consecration in July 1911. The second in 1969 damaged the main altar so badly that it was dismantled.

Architecture and equipment

Design

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a three-aisled, cruciform basilica with a round apse in the east . The multi-part western building is dominated by the high square bell tower with a gable roof . A massive square crossing tower with a tent roof stands over the crossing .

Painting

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche was initially richly painted. This original painting was largely removed when the church was renovated in 1958. Remains can be seen in the crossing and at the side altars, the Marien and Joseph altars.

Organs

Due to a lack of money, the largest church in Singen could only be equipped with an organ in 1925 , which was built by the well-known Überlingen organ building company Schwarz. However, since this instrument became damaged over time, a new organ with 34 registers on three manuals and pedal was built by the Weimbs Orgelbau company between 1986 and 1988 . This organ was rebuilt in its present condition in the 1990s. During the major renovation of the church in 2009, the entire organ was cleaned. The bombing works can swell and has a higher wind pressure than the other works. The playing and stop action is mechanical.
