Tower of the Sacred Heart Church

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Diez ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a Catholic parish church.

The building, originally built in 1706/1707 as a Lutheran church, was consecrated to St. Boniface in 1832 and became the parish church of the newly founded Herz-Jesu congregation in 1836 .

history

In 1706/1707 the Lutherans built their church on the Guckenberg, for which Princess Amalie von Diez provided the building site, wood and stones. It was a rectangular stone church with a three-story tower. The side walls of the nave are preserved today.

From 1800 it was again possible for Catholic Christians to settle in Protestant Diez. With the Idstein Convention , the Reformed and Lutheran Churches united to form the Nassau State Church . The services of the new evangelical community were held in the Diez collegiate church . The empty Lutheran Church was used by the military as a warehouse. From 1829 onwards, the first Limburg bishop Jakob Brand supported the efforts of the Diez Catholics to rent the old Lutheran church. After simple renovations, the church was consecrated to St. Boniface on March 11, 1832. On April 11, 1836, Bishop Johann Wilhelm Bausch bought the church for 2000 guilders for the Diezer community, which he founded on September 26 of the same year. In 1844 the church was closed for 10 months because the roof had partially collapsed and the tower was sloping. The roof was repaired and the tower removed. Due to the growing number of parishioners, a choir room was added in the east and a roof ridge tower as brick buildings in neo-Gothic style in the west . With the inauguration of the enlarged church on June 17th, 1887 by Bishop Karl Klein , the name of the church was changed to Herz-Jesu-Kirche.

In the years 1949 to 1955, fundamental renovations were carried out in and around the church. A new table altar made of old red Diezer marble was placed on the wall of the choir. In 1960, a 32 meter high reinforced concrete tower was built between the choir and the rectory, which also offers space for the sacristy.
