timeline

The family comes from Herzele in Flanders and has always received the same coat of arms. The spelling varies from Herzeele, Herzelles, Herselles to Hersel. One branch of the family emigrated to what is now the Netherlands in the 16th or 17th century. They also settled in Antwerp and their spelling was Herzelles. One member, Wilhelm Philipp van Herzeele, Herr auf Fauquez and Ittre , Royal Spanish Higher State Councilor in the Spanish Netherlands , obtained the Spanish awning dignity. His dominions Fauquez and Ittre were elevated to marquisate in 1689 and 1703 . The third Marquis, Ambroise-Joseph de Herzelles , was appointed superintendent and general manager of finances in the Austrian Netherlands by Maria Theresa . A branch of the Antwerp Herzelles, Van Herzeele, came to Amsterdam at the beginning of the 18th century and was part of the local patriciate . In 1818 it received the new Dutch nobility and in 1830 the title of baron . The branch, which originally remained in Germany, was named as Lords of Bodenheim , Laurenzberg and Vochem until 1771 . In the middle of the 19th century, descendants of the Dutch branch came back to Germany. The German natural scientist Albrecht Freiherr von Herzeele (* 1821) was an important family member . In 1830 Albrecht's father Cornelis Freiherr von Herzeele acquired the Vietgest Castle . The sex died out in 1960.
