The Herzogberg Tunnel is a two-tube motorway tunnel on the A2 south motorway in Styria , Austria . The length of the south tube is 2,007 m, that of the north tube 2,093 m.

The first tube, the north tube, was opened on September 27, 1982 during the opening of the south motorway between the Mooskirchen and Modriach junctions , the so-called pack section . This route was only partially built. In the course of this, a second tube of the Herzogberg tunnel was postponed until later.

The Herzogberg tunnel, like the Gräbern tunnel further south, soon became famous due to the numerous traffic jams in the tourist traffic. After the devastating tunnel fire in the Tauern tunnel on May 29, 1999, it was finally decided to expand all tunnels in Austria . This also included the second tube of the Herzogberg tunnel.

Construction of the second tunnel began in June 2000. On June 29, 2006, the second tube and the renovated old tube were finally released for full operation. The new tube was ready in June 2005, and traffic was routed through both tunnels in the summer months. After the end of the summer travel season, the renovation of the north tube began in September 2005, and all traffic was routed in a single lane through the newly constructed tunnel tube until both tubes were fully open to traffic. Construction was delayed by about a year due to an objection by a construction company regarding the award of the electrical machine equipment.

Before the new tube was completed, the four million euro television film Der Todestunnel by Bavaria Film was shot in the tunnel .
