The Hessenreuther Wald is located in the northern Upper Palatinate between Pressath , Kastl and Erbendorf .

The Hessenreuther Wald is one of the few large contiguous and near-natural forest areas in northeast Bavaria . It is the release area of ​​the Ural Owl . In addition, rare bird species such as black stork , red kite , tree falcon , white-tailed eagle and various bat species are at home there. Here is also one of only six breeding sites in southern Germany for the osprey, which is endangered throughout Germany and Europe .

The area is sparsely populated with smaller towns. The forests are at an altitude of approx. 500–600 meters above sea level. NN . The landscape is also characterized by rock formations with block heaps, meadows, small forest streams, as well as standing water and occasionally boggy areas.
