The Hessenstein is a 878 meter high mountain in the Bavarian Forest and lies between the villages of Kirchdorf im Wald , Klingenbrunn and Eppenschlag in the Freyung-Grafenau district .

On the rocky summit there is a wooden summit cross that can only be reached by easy climbing. The view goes to the south and west to the mountain range of the Upper Bavarian Forest. Several short hiking trails lead up to the Hessenstein from the surrounding villages.

The Hessenstein is designated as a geotope (272R026) by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. The summit area of ​​the Hessenstein consists of coarse-grained gneiss, which is an imposing summit cliff with far advanced wool sack weathering . The coarse-grained gneiss is garnet-bearing.
