The Hessian State Ballet is a ballet company that was founded in 2014. In the two Hessian state theaters Wiesbaden and Darmstadt it covers the respective ballet branch. The sponsors are the state of Hesse and the cities of Darmstadt and Wiesbaden . The core of the ensemble is made up of 28 dancers and a management team.

history

The creation of the Hessian State Ballet goes back to an initiative of Uwe Eric Laufenberg , Artistic Director at the State Theater Wiesbaden, and Karsten Wiegand, Artistic Director at the State Theater Darmstadt. When they began their artistic directorship in 2014, they agreed to merge their dance divisions and to replace two of their own dance ensembles with a total of 40 permanent dancers with the joint Hessian State Ballet. The close cooperation goes back to a contract from the seventies, in which the possibilities for cooperation between the two houses are regulated. The concept of the Hessian State Ballet provides on the one hand action ballets by the permanent chief choreographer and the rehearsal of pieces with guest choreographers from all over the world. In addition, the Hessian State Ballet invites international dance professionals and companies to guest performances. This should allow audiences in Darmstadt and Wiesbaden to experience a wider range of contemporary dance. Accordingly, the first ballet evening of the Hessian State Ballet (2014/15) under the title “Aufwind” consisted of three parts with pieces by Tim Plegge, Richard Siegal and Alexander Ekman.

In addition to the repertoire performances as well as guest performances and residencies, the Hessian State Ballet offers a number of events and workshops in the field of dance education. The target group are people with and without prior knowledge of dance.

When the Hessian State Ballet was founded, Tim Plegge was engaged as ballet director and chief choreographer. The full-length narrative ballets he created include the pieces Cinderella , Midsummer Night's Dream , Kaspar Hauser , Eine Winterreise, Fake and The Nutcracker . In addition, Plegge initiated several participation projects in which interested amateur dancers can also participate (including Odysee_21).

Bruno Heynderickx has been curator and deputy ballet director since the first season ; In this function he designs the program of guest performances and residencies of the Hessian State Theater. Heynderickx will take over the ballet management for the 2020/21 season, as the previous director Tim Plegge intends to devote himself more to choreographic work in the future. However, he will stay with the Hessian State Ballet as resident choreographer.
