The Small saddle shell ( Heteranomia squamula ) is a shell - type from the family of anomiidae (Anomiidae). It is the type species and also the only species of the genus Heteranomia Winckworth, 1922. It is widespread in the North Atlantic .

features

The unevenly hinged housing of the small saddle shell is almost rounded and measures up to 2.3 cm in diameter. It is attached to the hard substrate with the right flap facing down by byssus . The calcified byssus emerges through a rounded to egg-shaped bay in the right flap. The housing shape is variable and is also determined by the subsurface. The edge of the case is irregular but smooth. The vertebra lies on the back about in the middle, slightly away from the dorsal edge. The ligament lies in a crescent-shaped pit under the vertebrae. The lower right flap is thin and translucent. The surface of the left, upper flap shows only rough, dense radial lines that can be spiky, but can also be missing. Otherwise the z. T. quite rough growth lines. The skin is greyish-white with a hint of pink. The lock edge is straight, the lock itself toothless. The left, upper valve shows (only) two muscle impressions, a dorsal, larger impression of the byssus retractor muscle and directly next to it a smaller impression of the sphincter muscle. The lower, right flap shows only the (one) sphincter impression.

Similar species

The small saddle shell has two adjacent muscle impressions in the left flap. The large saddle shell ( Monia patelliformis ) also has two muscle impressions. However, these are larger and clearly separated from each other. In addition, the radial sculptural elements dominate the large saddle shell. The saddle shell ( anomia ephippium ) has three muscle impressions in the left flap.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the North Atlantic from northern Norway and Iceland to North Africa. It penetrates in the Mediterranean as far as the Aegean Sea .

The animals live with the byssus attached to the hard substrate, often also on the shells of crabs from shallow water to a depth of over 700 meters.

Taxonomy

The taxon was set up by Carl von Linné in 1758 as Anomia squamula . It is the type and only species of the genus Heteranomia Winckworth, 1922.
