geography
River course
The left main line upper course Haidbrunnengraben of the Tiefgraben arises in the Erlenstegener Forst , an area in the Central Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt , south of Heroldsberg from a series of source streams that flow on the southern slope of the Haidberg , the highest elevation of the Erlenstegener Forst ( 391 m above sea level) ) arise from. After the source streams have merged, the stream runs south-east of the Haidberg initially in a southerly and later in a south-westerly direction to the A3 . After crossing under the motorway, west of the Weissensee, the water is called Tiefgraben . From now on, the brook flows gently meandering through an alluvial forest with oak, alder and bird cherry on a boggy, sandy valley floor. To the south of the animal shelter, now in the city of Nuremberg, it unites with the right side branch upper course Kühgraben .
The Kühgraben rises not far from the sources of the Haidbrunnengraben, southwest of the Haidberg, runs mainly in a southerly direction until it meets the A3. There it goes a bit in a south-easterly direction, parallel to the motorway, to finally cross under it after a change of direction and flow in a south-westerly direction to the animal shelter. There it goes south and finally it flows into the deep trench.
After merging with the Kühgraben, the Tiefgraben flows through the area of the Erlenstegen shooting house in a westerly direction and from there to the south. Now the brook crosses the former ring railway and crosses it together with a hiking trail at a stone bridge. Now the deep trench suddenly changes its face. The valley becomes narrower, the valley flanks steeper, the brook winds strongly and leaves a narrow notch in the hard sandstone of the castle. The Tiefgraben then flows through the area of the natural garden pool, which it also feeds, from then on only rarely emerges, mostly in a canalised bed, past the Scheurl'sches Schloss, under the Bundesstraße 14 (Erlenstegenstraße) and the Nuremberg – Cheb and railway line then flows into the Pegnitz southeast of the Nürnberg-Erlenstegen stop .
The Tiefgraben flows through the protected landscape area Tiefgraben and Kohlbuck ( LSG-00536.15 ) as the namesake .
Catchment area
It covers about 10.7 km² and is largely forested.
