The Heumarkt barracks was located on the Heumarkt , at the corner of Schwarzenbergplatz , in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse .

It was completed as a cavalry barracks in 1774 and, after the purchase of neighboring properties, was converted into a wagon barracks in 1783 . From 1841 to 1844 the barracks were rebuilt as Kaiser-Ferdinand-Infanteriekaserne (it had 35 window axes to the Heumarkt 27–39). As part of the barracks transaction , it was taken over by the municipality of Vienna on February 6, 1909 and demolished in 1910. As a replacement for the Austro-Hungarian army, the much smaller " Moroccan barracks" was built, and the rest of the property was built with apartment blocks.

The barracks, built on 29,455 square meters of land (built-up area: 11,872 square meters), offered a staff and three infantry battalions of an infantry regiment, a hunter battalion, a staff and four batteries of a division artillery regiment as well as the garrison court and the Garrison arrest (Section II) place.

The Strohgasse has been a reminder of the barracks and their straw storage facilities since 1862 .
