Aortic hiatus

The aortic hiatus ( Latin for 'aortic slit') is an opening in the diaphragm between the thighs of the lumbar part. It lies obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the body and in humans extends from the first lumbar vertebra to the eleventh thoracic vertebra . The aorta runs through the aortic hiatus into the abdominal cavity and the thoracic duct into the mediastinum of the chest cavity . In contrast to the inferior vena cava at the vena cava hole , the structures that pass through are only fixed by loose connective tissue and thus stored in a sliding manner.
