Hieronimus Seeli

Hieronimus Seeli (born July 15, 1838 in Ilanz ; † December 2, 1912 in Zurich ) was the first chief forester in the Canton of Glarus .

Life

Hieronimus Seeli studied forest sciences at the Zurich Polytechnic from the winter semester 1859/60 to the summer semester 1862 . At the beginning of his studies he joined the Corps Rhenania , where he was reciprocated on April 24, 1860 . On November 29, 1861, together with five other Rhenans, including Arnold Bachofen , Wilhelm Bachofen and Fritz Lotz , he founded the Corps Helvetia Zurich (WSC) .

After completing his studies, he joined the Glarus Forest Service . In 1878 he was appointed the first Glarus Cantonal Forester, ushering in an era of over 130 years, which was characterized by the special quality and stability of Glarus forestry , which was also due to the fact that during this period the office of Cantonal Forester was only held by six people was perceived.

On September 10, 1881, one day before the actual landslide of Elm , he and a delegation of experts commemorated the area of ​​the Elmer Plattenberg, where on September 7 a rock had already caused major damage to the forest and constantly rolling debris stayed in this area unsafe. On September 11th the big landslide occurred, in which 10 million m³ of rock killed 114 people and buried 90 hectares of usable soil, considerable forest, 83 buildings, the associated local infrastructure and a slate mine.

In the play by Arnold Peter Öis cha nüüt passiere (Nothing can happen to us), which was premiered on May 15, 1987 by the Weinlandbühne in Andelfingen under his direction, one of the roles of the canton foreman is Hieronimus Seeli, which made Seeli literary fame. The play portrays the accident of 1881 as one of the first environmental disasters in Switzerland and aims to show the relevance and exemplary nature of this accident by interweaving the present and the past.
