life and work

Hijikata was adopted by the Gotō family for some time and used that name. He was in the service of Arao Kohachirō, a higher follower of the Inaba , but later gave up and went to Edo . In 1798, through the mediation of the Arao family, Ikeda Narikuni, the prince of Inaba province, appointed him as a painter. From that time on he used all his strength to paint pictures for Ikeda, where he also exerted a great influence on the art circles of the province. - Hijikata is particularly known for carp and flower / bird pictures. He died at the age of 72 and was buried in Keifuku-ji ( 景 福寺 ) in Tottori , the burial temple of the Arao. Among his best works are the screens “Wave Whip Coast” ( 荒 磯 の 図 , Ariso no zu ), kept in the Kyōto National Museum, and the screen and wall paintings ( 障 壁画 shōheki-ga ) in Zakka-in ( 雑 華 院 ), a sub-temple of Myōshin-ji in Kyoto.
