Hildegrim of Chalons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Hildegrim I of Châlons (* in Friesland ; † June 19, 827 ) was after his brother Liudger the second abbot of the Werden monastery , 30th Bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne missionary in Halberstadt . In 793 he is mentioned in a document as a deacon, in 796 at the latest he must have been ordained a priest.

Hildegrim was long considered the first bishop of Halberstadt.

Live and act

Hildegrim, who, like his brother Liudger, probably studied at the cathedral school in Utrecht and with Alcuin in York , became bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne in 802 . After his brother's death in 809 he became abbot of Werden.

The chapel he built, a rectangular building with a semicircular apse next to the abbey church in Werden , received the patronage of St. Stephen . In the Middle Ages this small chapel was even called "Basilica minor". The Stephanus patronage of Chalons-sur-Marne was transferred from Hildegrim to Osterwieck and subsequently to Halberstadt . Hildegrim took his St. Stephanus Church, founded in Osterwieck, as the starting point for missionary work in this area, which initially included parts of the later diocese of Hildesheim . In the course of this activity he is said to have founded 35 (parish) churches, all of which were consecrated to St. Stephen. However, there is currently no archaeological or documentary evidence of this.

His successor Thiatgrim became the first bishop in Halberstadt .

According to his wish, he was buried with his brother Liudger in the crypt of the Werden abbey church that he had built .

He is especially venerated as a saint in northern France.
