Hildene , also known as the Robert Todd Lincoln Estate , is a Grade II listed house in Manchester , Bennington County , Vermont and was the summer residence of Robert Todd Lincoln .
history
The 412 acre property was built in 1904 by the Boston architectural firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge for Robert Todd Lincoln , the first son of Abraham Lincoln . Lincoln lived here until his death in 1926. Hildene continued to be owned by the Lincoln family until the builder's granddaughter, Mary Lincoln Beckwith, died and the property was inherited by the Christian Science Church .
Hildene was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1977 as a monument . In addition to Hildene, the residential building, there are 21 other structures spread across the property, which count as contributing properties , including a coach house, farmhouses and barns from the early 19th century and other outbuildings.
architecture
Hildene is designed in the style of the Georgian Revival and, standing on a promontory, overlooks Manchester, which lies in a valley. The north-facing front facade has a length of 14 window openings, while the side walls are two windows wide. The central building is two and a half stories high, the two side wings are half a story lower and, like the main part, end with a hipped roof .
