Red Cloud Agency , today Pine Ridge Agency, is a base of the Bureau of Indian Affairs , a division of the US Department of the Interior in Pine Ridge , South Dakota. Administratively, the base is responsible for the Pine Ridge Reservation and for the members of the Oglala Sioux Indians. According to its own information, the base looks after 46,855 people and manages 2.1 million acres of land, which corresponds to 8498.7 km². The Red Cloud Agency was founded on the North Platte River in what is now Wyoming after the Fort Laramie Treaty was signed in 1868 . In August 1873, the agency moved to Dawes County on the outskirts of Crawford Township in northwestern Nebraska . The Red Cloud Agency was relocated to the White River in South Dakota in October 1877 and was renamed the Pine Ridge Agency. Its original name comes from the Oglala chief Red Cloud . The Red Cloud Agency played a vital role in the Sioux Wars and in suppressing the ghost dance movement . The massacre at Wounded Knee (Lakota Chankpe Opi Wakpala) in 1890 took place in the area of the base. Over time, the Agency ceded many tasks to the reserve administration. However, she is still responsible for the administration of the lands, especially for leasing them to tribal and non-tribal members. It also regulates social welfare and operates the fire department in the large reserve area. The road administration is also subordinate to the base. From 1972 to 1976 there were incidents and acts of violence that received nationwide attention in the area of the base, one of the poorest areas in the USA, see ( Dick Wilson and American Indian Movement ).
