The Hildesheim Reconciliation Cross is an ecumenical symbol in the form of a three-dimensional cross. It was designed and built as a commissioned work for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in the Abbey of Königsmünster in Meschede . On March 11, 2017, Christians symbolically erected it in the Michaeliskirche in Hildesheim during a reconciliation service of Protestants and Catholics . The Hildesheim Cross of Reconciliation is exhibited in the Museum for Art and Cultural History Dortmund .

Shape and material of the great original

The Reconciliation Cross is a three-dimensional cross. It consists of three bars that cross each other vertically in the middle. The outside of the cross is made of steel and rusty, inside it is gilded with gold leaf. The cross is 2.40 m by 2.40 m by 2.60 m and weighs 250 kg. Lying it has the shape of a barrier, erect it becomes a cross and signpost. While the upright cross is unstable , it is stable when lying down as a barrier .

Small replicas

Small replicas of the large original, the edges of which are each 13 cm long, are made in Meschede in the abbey.

The cross was designed and manufactured by Benedictine Father Abraham Fischer. He also designed the cross for the “Ruhr 2010” Capital of Culture year.

The Hildesheim Cross of Reconciliation as a symbol on Reformation Day 2017

As part of the Reformation celebrations on October 31, 2017, the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, Ilse Junkermann , presented the chairman of the Catholic German Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx , with a Hildesheim Cross of Reconciliation as an ecumenical symbol. In addition, the chairman of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm , and the chairman of the Catholic German Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, jointly presented a cross to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the central festival service of the Protestants in the Wittenberg Castle Church .
