Himacerus boops is a species of bug fromthe sickle bug family (Nabidae).

features

The bugs are 6.2 to 7.3 millimeters long. The species is easy to determine based on its usually shortened (brachypteric) wings, the large compound eyes and the three dark longitudinal stripes on the pronotum . Like Himacerus major , the species has a wide, black band at the tip of the thighs ( femora ) of the hind legs, but unlike the similar species, it lacks the spots a little below the bandage on the thighs. Females with fully developed (macropter) wings occur very rarely. Macroptere males presumably do not exist.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from the south of Scandinavia and the south of the British Isles across western and central Europe and east to Siberia and the Caspian region. It is absent in most of the Mediterranean. In Germany it is more common north of the Main line and not uncommon in the north. In the south it is only found sporadically. In Austria the species is very rare and only known from the east (Lower Austria and Burgenland).

Many different habitats are populated without any vegetation. In northern Germany, for example, they occur in moist habitats such as wet meadows, extensively used cattle pastures and fallow land, in moderately dry calluna populations and also in dry, warm, sandy habitats with sparse vegetation, such as sand habitats with the character of a dune or on limestone grasslands and also in salt influenced habitats near the coast or inland. In the low mountain ranges they have been proven up to over 800 meters above sea level.

Way of life

Both the nymphs and the adults of Himacerus boops live on the ground and rarely climb up grass. They are mainly nocturnal and then also stay in the higher areas of the herbaceous layer. The overwintering takes place as an egg. These are stung into blades of grass by the females. The nymphs appear from May to the end of July, the adults from the beginning of July, and under favorable conditions even from mid-June. The mating can be observed well into autumn. Individual adult bedbugs can be observed until November.

Taxonomy

The species belongs to the subgenus Stalia Reuter, which is accepted by some editors as a genus, the species is then referred to with the synonym Stalia boops .
