The Himmelpforter Möhnetal is a small-scale natural subunit with the order number 334.20 of the Lower Arnsberg Forest ("Eichwald") (334.2) within the North Sauerland Oberland (334). According to the handbook of the natural division of Germany, it includes the terraced sole valley of the Möhne below the Möhne lake from the dam wall to the bend of the lower Möhne in the Niederense district of Enser .
The name of the natural area is derived from the former Himmelpforten monastery near Niederense, which was completely destroyed in 1943 due to the Möhne disaster . Other places in the natural area are the Möhnesee districts of Günne and Brüningsen , which, like Niederense, were founded on the lower loess loam-covered terraces above the wide meadow. The valley floor is about 180 m above sea level. NN and is about 70 m deep sunk gently into the Upper Carboniferous clay and greywacke slate of the Hagen strata .
