Industrial upholstered furniture production began in 1948. In 1955 the company already had 1,000 employees. In 1957 Carl Hierl GmbH changed its name to Himolla ; the name stood for "heavenly, plump, pleasant". In 1958 the construction of the Himolla plant began at its current location.

In 1966, the development of the Himolla shell chair cost the owner Hierl the company, because the entry into mass production took place on the basis of a miscalculation. The company was on the verge of bankruptcy with 3000 employees and an output of around 4000 chairs per day. In 1966 Carl Hierl was forced by the creditors to sell part of his shares and to refrain from any business activity.

From 1972 to 1994 the company developed into one of the largest upholstered furniture manufacturers in Europe. Himolla has been part of the Welle-Holding in Paderborn since 2000 . In 2007 Krauss & Weinbeer Polstermöbel in Lichtenfels (Upper Franconia) was taken over.
