Hindu Makkal Katchi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) (dt. Hindu People's Party ) is a conservative nationalist-Hindu oriented party in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

The Hindu Makkal Katchi emerged in 1993 as a split from the Hindu Munnani . Its founder was SV Sridhar . The party was later led by Arjun Sampath , another prominent party member was R. Kalidas , who was murdered in 2005 .

Members of the party came into conflict with the law on several occasions due to extremist actions, for example Arjun Sampath was imprisoned in 1997 for attempted murder. In 2008 and 2009, several party members were taken into preventive police custody to prevent them from holding nationalist demonstrations on the Sri Lankan island of Kachchatheevu .

The Hindu Makkal Katchi also hit the headlines with actions against women and secularly oriented Indians. She charged Indian film stars Kushboo Sundar (2006), Shriya Saran (2008) and Mallika Sherawat (2008) for wearing immoral clothing and insulting Hindu values. She also carried out campaigns against women and teenage lovers going to pubs on Valentine's Day .
