Hinko Smrekar (born July 13, 1883 in Ljubljana ; † October 1, 1942 ibid) was a Slovenian painter, draftsman, caricaturist, graphic artist and illustrator.

Smrekar studied law at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck from 1901 , but broke off his studies after four semesters and from then on devoted himself to art.

In 1903 Smrekar co-founded the Viennese artists' club “Vesna” (Spring) where he met many Slovenian artists. He attended the kk Kunstgewerbeschule of the kk Austrian Museum for Art and Industry in Vienna. In 1905 he returned to his family in Ljubljana and Kranj .

From 1905 he published his drawings in the satirical magazine Osa (Wespe) in Laibach. Together with the writer Maxim Gaspari, he visited Munich several times and studied painting there for a year.

He was called up for military service in 1915 and was soon arrested as a "serbophil". While in custody, he began to simulate a mental illness and was taken to the hospital in Graz-Scheifling. He was released as unfit for military service.

During the First World War he published a cycle of anti-war caricatures under his name.

After the First World War he tried to found his own magazine Pikapok . He illustrated the works of Ivan Cankar and other Slovenian authors and also took on drawing lessons.

In 1927 his mother died and Smrekar was left alone, having lost his father in 1906.

During the Second World War he was arrested as a member of the resistance movement by Italian occupiers and executed two days later without trial.
