Hinrich Magens (born May 29, 1857 in Strohdeich near Glückstadt ; † November 17, 1925 ) was a German civil engineer and entrepreneur.

Life

Magens, son of the farm owner Peter Magens, attended the community school in Strohdeich and from 1868 the high school in Glückstadt . He passed his Abitur at the secondary school in Rendsburg . Afterwards he was a trainee at the building inspection in Glückstadt, before he began studying civil engineering at the Technical University in Hanover in 1876 . There he became a member of the Corps Ostfalia. After the site manager examination, which he passed in 1881, Magens served as a one-year volunteer in Dresden and continued his studies at the technical university there . During this time he was busy straightening the Oder , building groynes in Ratibor and building the large quay wall in Tönning . In 1885 he passed the government master builder examination .

In the civil service he was employed, among other things, for surveying and bearing-finding on the Eider , in 1890 for the expansion of the fishing port in Geestemünde and then for making the Ilmenau near Lüneburg navigable. He finally resigned from the civil service and joined the company Dyckerhoff & Widmann , where he received a position as technical director of one of the plants in Biebrich and was entrusted with larger concrete structures, including the Dresden sewer system and a large Saxon railway viaduct. In 1896 he moved to Altona and became a partner in the Gebr. Braun company. In 1897 he went to Tsingtau to build the port facilities for an Altona syndicate . After returning to Hamburg, he set up his own business in 1898 by founding the H. Magens concrete works, which were later converted into a GmbH.

Magens gained importance through his scientific research and material testing. They established his reputation as an authority in the field of reinforced concrete construction. Magens was the inventor of ready-mixed concrete , which he patented in 1903 and which he had been producing himself in Hamburg since the same year.
