The Hinterdorf Unterammergau forms the northern part of the village Unterammergau in the Upper Bavarian municipality Unterammergau .

history

Unterammergau was hit twice in its history by large local fires, each of which destroyed a large part of the mostly entirely wooden farm and craft houses. 63 buildings were destroyed in the fire of 1777 and 41 in the fire of 1836.

The reconstruction from 1836 took place with the support of the Kingdom of Bavaria. However, instead of the earlier Haufendorf construction method, the authorities implemented looser development as a precaution against further local fires.

description

Residential parts of the courtyards on the north side of Pürschlingstrasse
Economic parts of the courtyards on the south side of Pürschlingstrasse

The Hinterdorf Unterammergau essentially consists of five rows of single-ridge farmhouses, which run roughly in an east-west direction. Between these lines there are four parallel streets, from the south: Pürschlingstraße , Martin-Schweiger-Straße, Aletseestraße and Steinheilstraße. The houses are built in single-ridge construction and run in a north-south direction, so they are gable-free. The gable end of the living quarters of the farmhouses point to the south, more precisely to the south-southeast . The residential gables are usually five window axes wide, and there is sufficient space between the individual houses to prevent them from spreading to the neighboring building in the event of a fire.

This arrangement results in the following characteristic picture for each of the four main streets of the Hinterdorf: on the north side plastered white gables of the residential areas with balconies, on the south side wooden gables of the economic areas at the rear of the next row of houses. By arranging the houses to the side, it was achieved that all houses get enough sun. Despite this staggered arrangement, there are lines of sight between the staggered houses in a south-north direction.

Since the roofs were also covered with tiles for fire protection, they are more steeply inclined than it used to be for the roofs covered with flat leg shingles in the Oberland. The houses are mostly surrounded by small gardens, some with fruit trees.

This regular arrangement is interrupted in some places. Mühlstrasse and Scherenauer Strasse, which leads to the Scherenau district, run diagonally through the ensemble and meet south of Martin-Schweiger-Strasse. The house in the corner formed by them interrupts the street alignment of Martin-Schweiger-Straße. In the south-west of the Hinterdorf there are some houses at right angles to the general direction of construction, among them the Gasthof Stern. Its east gable forms a visual end to Pürschlingstrasse, which leads around the inn in a hook-shaped course.

Monument protection

The entire Hinterdorf Unterammergau is registered as a monument ensemble in the Bavarian Monument List.

Outwardly, most of the houses in the ensemble still show their historical appearance, only a few balconies have been modernized.

The houses in Dorfstrasse 4 and Pürschlingstrasse 10 are individually listed , an inscription panel on the house in Dorfstrasse 2 and a mural on the house in Pürschlingstrasse 14.
