Hinterm Horizont is an album by the German rapper Shiml , which was released on February 24, 2006 on the independent label Selfmade Records . It is the fourth album by the Düsseldorf label and, after the Internet albums In the Center of the Earth and After Us the Rest , Shiml's first commercially released album.

Background and origin

Jan Viohl published his first albums under the pseudonym Shiml for free on the Internet. In 2005 Slick One, one of the founders of the label Selfmade Records , became aware of the rapper from Bremen after MontanaMax had sent the album Nach uns der Rest, recorded together with Shiml, to various labels. Slick One signed Viohl after a few mutual meetings.

Work on Hinterm Horizont began after the joint album by Shiml and MontanaMax had been completed, so that Shiml had already recorded it before the contract was signed. As a result of the new collaboration, the rapper decided to release the album on Selfmade Records . Shiml initially revised the title and recorded some songs again. In February 2006, Hinterm Horizont was released as Shiml's first commercial album.

All of my songs were made at night. I'm quite a night owl anyway. The day is too hectic, I don't have the peace to be able to make my music. “Due to the way of working on the pieces of the album until the morning, the title“ Hinterm Horizont ”was created.

After completing the recording of the album, was beyond the horizon of MixChris, a hip-hop producer, mixed . As the last production process, this also took over the mastering .

production

The hip-hop beats on the basis of which Shiml presents his lyrics in the form of spoken chants were largely produced by Mix Chris. He had already contributed the beats for the joint album Nach uns der Rest von Shiml and MontanaMax in 2005 . For Hinterm Horizont , Mix Chris produced the titles Pechschwarz , Meine Geschichte , Druckbetankung , Besides us , Out of the chest , lead role , Hinterm Horizont and Outro . Furthermore, Shiml used three of his own productions for the album, which form the background music for the pieces Intro , To the Limit and Apocalypse . The hip-hop musician Flipstar, who was involved in founding Selfmade Records , produced the track Kein Morgen . In addition, the beat was to pull myself up by Rizbo to the road burning of JaJa to black light of Coban and as far as you can contributed by nightmare.

The background music to Shiml's chants is, adapted to the themes, gloomy and is intended to convey a melancholy mood in most of the songs. Strings were used for numerous titles . These can be heard in the pieces Bis zum Limit , Hinterm Horizont and Outro . An electric guitar is also used in To the Limit . Furthermore , piano sounds can be heard in some songs, such as Pechschwarz , Meine Geschichte and Hinterm Horizont . Furthermore, choirs were sampled for the beats of the pieces Asche und Staub and Hinterm Horizont .

marketing

The songs Up to the Limit and My Story were both partially implemented as a video. The clip known as “split video” is rotated entirely in black and white. When choosing the two titles, according to Shiml, care was taken to pick out two stylistically different pieces. One day of shooting was required for the video recorded in the Neue Vahr district of Bremen .

To beyond the horizon was a snippet , which presents the title of the album cut way on the Internet. On March 30, 2006, there was a "release party" in the Bremen Tower to celebrate the release of the album.

Self-awareness

Shiml said in an interview that the album offered “great variety and variety”. He renounces "good mood songs". In his opinion, German rap copied themes and styles from international rappers instead of “creating something new and independent” so that he could not identify with it.

criticism

In a review by the editors of hip-hop magazine Juice, Hinterm Horizont received three and a half of a possible six "crowns". The album is "equipped with dark, but rather fresh and neo-like beats that offer the right atmosphere" for Shiml's lyrics. The rapper's “visual language” is also praised. On the other hand, the combination of street rap and melancholic beats would be “a bit monotonous”, and the sound carrier would be “a little too serious in places.” In summary, Hinterm Horizont is described as “expandable”.

The backspin Hip Hop magazine rated Shimls album with three and a half of a possible five points. From the magazine's point of view, Shiml is able to record thoughtful titles and thus stimulate his audience to think. Furthermore, the piece Zieh mich hoch is highlighted as a recommendation among the songs that can be assigned to the style of battle rap. The title No Tomorrow is mainly praised for the involvement of Flipstars. On the other hand, the editorial team sees Shiml's "voice that sounds too monotonous over the length of the album" as negative.
