Hippocampus satomiae ( Syn .: Hippocampus waleananus Martin F. Gomon and Kuiter, 2009 ) is a species of fish from the seahorse ( hippocampus )genus. It was only described in 2008. The species epithet honors Satomi Onishi, a diving guide who discovered the species in 2003 in the waters near Derawan, Kalimantan , Indonesia at a depth between 10 and 18 meters.

features

The holotype , a male, is 13.8 mm in length. The paratype, a female, measures 13.4 mm. Other specimens discovered have a height of 11 mm and a standard length of 14 mm. This makes Hippocampus satomiae the second smallest known seahorse after the Denise pygmy seahorse. The number of torso rings is 12. The tail is characterized by 27 to 28 rings. There are 13 dorsal rays and 9 pectoral rays. The anal fin is small or absent. The head length is 22.3 percent of the standard body length. The length of the muzzle makes up 51.0 percent of the length of the head. Living specimens are colored white to light brown or gray. Specimens soaked in alcohol are light gray and almost transparent.

Distribution and way of life

Hippocampus satomiae is found in various locations in Indonesian waters, including at Derawan on the Kalimantan coast and in the Lembeh Strait on the northern Sulawesi coast . The species is crepuscular and difficult to find during the day. At night, Hippocampus satomiae can be observed in groups of three to five individuals in small gorgonians at depths between 15 and 20 meters at the bottom below reef overhangs.

Reproduction

The birth was observed and photographed on various occasions. The young seahorses are pitch black at birth, 3 mm high and have a shape similar to the adult animals. The holotype collected in October 2003 was pregnant and carried eight young in the brood pouch.
