The variable flat ladybird ( Hippodamia variegata ) is a beetle from the ladybird family (Coccinellidae).

description

The beetles are about three to 5.5 millimeters in size and have a somewhat elongated body that is only slightly arched. The red to reddish orange wing has a black, white flanked spot on both sides on the scutellum and either three black spots in the rear area on each wing, or six black spots each. The pronotum is yellow and has a crown-shaped, black markings. The head is also yellow and has a dominant black transverse band at the base. The underside of the body is black, the legs are dark except for the yellowish front legs.

Occurrence

The beetles are distributed all over Europe , North Africa and Asia , but they are absent in the far north. They live in fields, meadows, on the edges of forests and on the rivers of the North and Baltic Seas .

Way of life

The adults hibernate at the edge of the forest between moss.

food

Like most species of ladybirds, the beetles and larvae of the variable flat ladybird feed on scale and aphids .
