The Hippodrome State Theater (often referred to as the Hipp for short by local residents ) is a regional professional theater located in central Gainesville , Florida , United States . It was founded in 1972 by local actors.
Inside, many of the original walls and girders from the time the Hippodrome State Theater was used as a post office and courthouse have been preserved. In 1980 it was converted into a theater with 266 seats on the second floor and a cinema with 80 seats on the first floor. The Beaux-Arts- style building has one of the oldest working elevators in Florida. The elevator operator must manually close the car door and then move a switch.
Professional actors work at the Hippodrome State Theater, and it has its own set and costume designers, sound and lighting technicians who take care of the main stage productions. It offers theater lessons for young people. The program includes productions from Broadway and Off-Broadway as well as essay films and auteur films .
US Post Office and Courthouse
The building is a former United States Postal Service post office on the first floor and Federal Courthouse on the second floor, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 10, 1979 .
