Hippolyte Worms (born May 26, 1889 , † January 28, 1962 ) was a French banker and founder of the Banque Worms .

biography

Hippolyte Worms was born in 1889. He was a great-grandson of the banker Olry Worms de Romilly and grandson of Hippolyte Worms (1801–1877), the founder of the Worms group of companies, which specialized in sea freight, warehousing and wholesale. He began banking in 1928, from which the Banque Worms developed.

From 1916 Hippolyte Worms developed activities for the Worms group in the field of construction in maritime shipping; at the same time he expanded the finance and investment sector. In the 1930s he made a decisive contribution to the development of the French industrial landscape.

Despite his Jewish origins, he was accused of collaborating with the Germans during World War II . During the German occupation , Roy Ladurie was director of the Banque Worms.

Hippolyte Worms was arrested in 1944 and spent a few months in Fresnes, south of Paris. The indictment had no consequences.

In the post-war period, Hippolyte Worms expanded the insurance sector for the group. He acquired the majority in two companies ( La Préservatrice and La Foncière ), whose networks formed the basis for the establishment of Athéna Insurance in 1989.
