Olry Worms de Romilly

Olry Worms de Romilly (originally Olry Hayem Worms ; born September 19, 1759 in Sarrelouis ; died May 7, 1849 in Paris ) was a French banker . From 1826 to 1843 he was President of the Consistoire central israélite .

Life

Like his father, Worms de Romilly was initially a wholesaler in Lorraine. In 1778 the father of his first wife transferred his fortune to his descendants, which significantly promoted his business.

From 1790 he worked as a banker in Paris ; his third wife brought in a fortune of 20,000 livres in 1792 . A year later he lived at 44 Rue de Bondy . In 1796 he was involved in founding the Caisse des comptes courants bank . In 1796 or 1797 he acquired the castle of Romilly-sur-Seine and in 1808 changed his name from "Olry Hayem Worms" to "Olry Worms de Romilly". In Romilly-sur-Seine he founded a hosiery factory with a capital investment of 150,000 francs .

From 1801 to 1814 he was second deputy mayor of the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Worms de Romilly was one of the 111 representatives of French Jewry who were appointed to the Assemblée solennelle des juifs de France founded by Napoleon in 1806 . From this meeting in 1808 the Consistoire central israélite emerged. In 1826 Worms de Romilly was elected chairman of the consistory; he held this office until 1843.

In 1814 he was accepted into the Legion of Honor . In 1830 he acquired the Hôtel de Sechtré in Paris.

family

Olry Hayem Worms was born to Hayem Worms (1730-1812) and his wife Keile Levy (1738-1805). His brother was Léon Chaim Worms (1766–1839). Olry Hayem Worms married first Blimle Levy (1759-1784) and in 1792 in third marriage Flore Zacharie (1773-1821). From his three marriages, Worms de Romilly had a total of six children, three sons and three daughters. One of the daughters married the Baron Maurice de Haber (1798–1872), another Abraham Gustave Rodrigues-Henriques (1800–1856).

Olry Worms de Romilly was the grandfather of Henri Félix Louis Worms de Romilly (1824-1903), a French chemist and physicist, doctor of law and mayor of Le Mesnil-le-Roi , co-founder and president of the Société française de physique . Olry Worms de Romilly was the great-grandfather of Hippolyte Worms , the founder of the Banque Worms .
