The Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France ( Hebrew הַמוֹעָצָה הַמְיַצֵּגַּת שֶׁל מוֹסָדוֹת יְהוּדִים צָרְפָתִים; dt .: Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France ) is the umbrella organization of Jewish organizations in France .

Surname

The organization is known by the acronym CRIF , the actual abbreviation for Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France would be CRIJF . The short form CRIF comes from the originally historical name Conseil représentatif des israélites de France (German: Representative Council of the Israelites of France ). Today's name is more of an institutional type, while earlier the approach was more of an individual type, because the acronym does not refer to the current lemma with the words "[...] Institutions juives [...]", but to the original and historical word "[... ] israélites […] ”in the lemma.

history

The Conseil représentatif des israélites de France emerged in 1944 from the Comité generale de Défense des Juifs (CGD, German: General Committee for the Defense of the Jews ) founded in Grenoble in July 1943 , whose task was to protect the Jews persecuted by the National Socialists to rescue.

The Comité generale de Défense des Juifs brought together the communists of the Union des Juifs pour la Résistance et l'Entraide (UJRE), the Zionists of the Fédération des sociétés juives de France (FSJF), the Bundists and the atheists .

The Consistoire central israélite de France , the official organization of French Jewry, was also involved in the creation of the Conseil représentatif des israélites de France .

The CRIF then published a joint charter outlining the Franco-Jewish political program of the post-war period. The CRIF tried to unite all Jews in France. The first chairman was Léon Meiss (1896–1966). The first group of leaders of the Conseil consisted of Léo Glaeser (1887–1944), Joseph Fisher, Chil Najman (1894–1953), Nahum Herman, Zvi Levin, Michel Topiol, Joseph Frydman, F. Schrager, Henri Adam, and Claude Kelman Adam Rayski (1913-2008).

After the war, the CRIF immediately established contacts with international Jewish groups such as the World Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Committee .

Task and role

The umbrella organization connects various political, social and religious currents within the Jewish communities in France . The umbrella organization CRIF brings together more than 60 organizations, including the Fonds social juif unifié (FSJU) and the Alliance Israélite Universelle . At the international level, the CRIF is a member of the World Jewish Congress.

Diner du crif

The Dîner du CRIF is an annual fundraising dinner organized by the CRIF and where numerous politicians are invited. The first Dîner du CRIF was organized in 1985 with around fifty invitees. More than 700 people are currently meeting there. The 30th Dîner du CRIF took place on February 23, 2015, with 700 invitees meeting at the Hôtel Pullman-Montparnasse in Paris, including President François Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls .
