Cukierman was born in 1936 to Max Cukierman from Ożarów and his wife Miriam Latowicka (or Latovicka); his father had set up shop in France in 1932 as a raincoat manufacturer. His brother Henri was born on February 11, 1944 in Nice . In 1962 he married the Israeli Shoschana Goldhart ( Hebrew שושנה גולדהארט ('לב-זהב')), with whom he has four children. Max Cukierman was also chairman of the Yiddish-language daily Unzer Wort ( Yiddish אונדזער װאָרט; German: Our word ). This is why his son Roger Cukierman speaks Yiddish at home, using the Yiddish word “human” as a term for dignified being:

“There are people I don't want to argue with. What do you want? That the Jews throw themselves into the sea? I don't play in this category…. I admit that you can have disagreements, but you should stay "human" despite everything . ("Il ya des gens avec lesquels je ne veux même pas discuter. Ils veulent quoi? Que les juifs se jettent eux-même à la mer? Je ne joue pas dans cette catégorie… Je conçois qu'on puisse être en désaccord, mais il faut que le débat reste entre "Mensch" en yiddish: des hommes dignes »)."
