T-Mobile Sidekick 3 (Hiptop)

The Hiptop is an early smartphone from the US manufacturer Danger. In addition to GPRS telephony, the functions include receiving e-mail, a web browser, an instant messaging client and server terminal adapter (SSH). A special feature of the system is that a lot of data and possibly media files are not stored in the device as usual, but on the service provider's servers via the cellular network. In 2005, hackers used this special feature and a security hole to hack into the accounts of Paris Hilton and other celebrities and publish the phone numbers and photos stored in them on the Internet.

history

In Germany, the Hiptop (also known as Sidekick , the marketing name of T-Mobile ) has been marketed by the mobile operator E-Plus since 2003 together with an Internet flat rate . The improved successor version, Hiptop 2, was available from E-Plus in Germany from April 2005. The new version differs from its predecessor mainly through an integrated camera and the better workmanship, which was often criticized in the old version. The Hiptop 2 has also been available from T-Mobile as Sidekick II since July 2005, but in contrast to E-Plus with a volume tariff with 30 MB inclusive volume instead of a flat rate. However, this tariff was also comparable to a flat rate until the end of 2006, as no additional transfer volume was charged until then.

Since 2006, a flat rate for the Sidekick has also been available from T-Mobile at a price of 10 euros.

In March 2006, E-Plus officially ceased active marketing of the Hiptop 2.

In December 2006, T-Mobile presented the Hiptop 3 under the product name Sidekick 3 . It differs from its predecessor model in that it has a navigation ball instead of a navigation steering wheel, a built-in MP3 player and the option of expanding the memory using a mini SD card slot.

From November 2007 the "Sidekick Slide" was sold in the USA. Shortly after the appearance of the Sidekick Slide in the USA, it was withdrawn from the market due to technical problems, but later offered again. It is the first device to be built by Motorola and not, like the previous models, by Sharp .

The Sidekick LX, which was also released in the United States in October 2007, was not released in Germany, just like the Sidekick ID, which was released the year before.

On April 15, 2008, the manufacturer Danger was taken over by Microsoft. In October 2009, Danger lost data from an unexplained number of customers. The service in Germany was discontinued at the end of 2009. As a result, all German users lost their data such as B. photos, contacts, e-mails including e-mail accounts - if they no longer owned the device. Before the recruitment, the data was still available on a T-Mobile website that could be used to download the data.

The protagonist of the detective series Veronica Mars and Wallace Fennel, another main character of the television series, both have a sidekick.
