Ryōhei Hirose

Ryōhei Hirose ( Japanese 廣 瀬 量 平 , Hirose Ryōhei ; born July 17, 1930 in Hakodate ; † November 24, 2008 ) was a Japanese composer.

Life

Hirose studied at the Tokyo Art School with Tomojirō Ikenouchi and Akio Yashiro . In 1963 he composed the music for a play by Yoshie Hotta for traditional Japanese instruments. As a result, he received numerous commissioned compositions for Japanese instruments and was particularly committed to the Shakuhachi , a Japanese bamboo flute.

Since the 1970s he has also composed compositions for European instruments, such as for harp, celesta, piano, cello, viola, percussion instruments and others, with Hirose combining Japanese and European musical traditions. His compositions for tape were also known.

From 1977 to 1996 Hirose was a music professor at Kyōto University . He also taught at the Conservatory (1977–79) and the Tokyo Art School (1991–98) and gave guest lectures at the Mozarteum Salzburg (1999) and the Folkwang University in Essen (2003).
