Ōguri Hiroshi

Ōguri Hiroshi (also Ohguri ; Japanese 大 栗 裕 ; born July 9, 1918 in Osaka , Osaka Prefecture ; † April 18, 1982 ) was a Japanese composer and horn player .

The son of a merchant family, he grew up in Osaka's Senba district, the commercial center. His father played a traditional Japanese instrument, gidayū . He first came into contact with European music in 1931 at the Tennōji Commercial School ( 天王寺 商業 学校 , Ōsaka-shiritsu Tennōji shōgyō gakkō ) in Osaka. There he became a member of the wind orchestra and played the horn . Even if he had developed into an excellent horn player, he wanted more. He first learned composition autodidactically. In 1936 he graduated from the commercial school and his compositions were performed by the high school wind orchestra.

After graduating from high school, he traditionally had to work in his parents' trading house. However, his enthusiasm for music probably drove him to Tokyo . There he studied horn and in 1941 he became horn player in the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra , the predecessor of today's Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , under the direction of Manfred Gurlitt at the time . Many works by European composers have been performed with this orchestra, so the works of Japanese composers such as Ifukube Akira , Hayasaka Fumio and Watanabe Urato particularly stimulated him .

In 1946 he switched to the Japan Symphony Orchestra , the predecessor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra , as principal horn player . In 1949 he returned to Osaka and in 1950 became a member of the Kansai Symphony Orchestra , which was later renamed the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra . In this orchestra he worked until 1966. He also worked as a lecturer at the Kyoto College of Woman and the Osaka College for Music .

He left a rather extensive oeuvre in which he often integrated the culture and traditions of his hometown and its surroundings ( Kyōto , Kobe, etc.).
