Hirsch is a hamlet ( Hamlet ) in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and is located about 20 miles east of the city of Estevan .

history

Hirsch ( 574  m above sea level) was founded in May 1892 by Jewish settlers as part of the activities of the Baron Maurice-de-Hirsch Foundation and the Jewish Colonization Association (JCA). It was the first JCA settlement (others followed, including in Argentina) and was named after the founder of the foundation, one of the most important Jewish philanthropists of the 19th century.

During the crisis in the 1930s (" Dust Bowl " drought in the prairie areas of the Midwestern North America), most Jewish families left the place and moved to Winnipeg .

The place is best known for the autobiography of Mrs. Zellickson (also: Zelickson), first name unknown, immigrated in 1891, who wrote extensively in 1925 about life on the prairie and especially about the role of women in it. Nor'-West Farmer magazine had sparked such a broad discussion about women on the prairie.
