Deer garden

The deer garden in Dornholzhausen is a small game park , a popular excursion destination in the Vordertaunus and historically part of the Landgravial Gardens Bad Homburg .

history

The garden was built in 1698 by Landgrave Friedrich II . The game reserve was in 1820 by Friedrich VI. set up. The construction work began on November 20, 1820 and ended on December 9, as the existing plants could be used. The first animals, twelve deer, were a gift from the Grand Duke of the neighboring Grand Duchy of Hesse , Ludwig I.

The landgrave family took a liking to the complex and arranged for an extension in 1822. In addition to an expansion of the area, a small hunting lodge, the "Pürschhäuschen" was built.

From 1840 to 1873 the enclosure was leased to hunters by the Bad Homburg casino . In the contract of June 30, 1840, an annual rent for hunting rights of 1,800 guilders was set. The hunt was offered to the wealthy visitors of the spa and casino as an additional exclusive pleasure. The annex to the contract shows a population of 65 fallow deer in 1840 for the deer garden .

In 1858 the Pürschhäuschen was renovated and a public inn was set up there for the first time. When the casino closed in 1872, the Hirschgarten was operated by the city of Bad Homburg. The deer garden developed into an attraction for the spa guests.

The gastronomy in the Hirschgarten was managed for two generations from 1903 to 1960 by the Scheller family from Oberursel . This initially took place in more than cramped conditions. The dining room was fifteen square meters, the open veranda ten square meters. There was no electricity, gas or water connection until 1960. In 1936 the house was expanded significantly. The difficulty arose here that the old building was a listed building . Because of this, the new building was built around the old one. The previous structure was thus preserved and the letter of the law was satisfied.

In 1962, the city of Bad Homburg acquired the land from the State of Hesse and in 1964 built the current building, which initially housed a Bohemian venison specialty restaurant. The previous building was demolished. At the same time, the site was restructured. While visitors used to walk around in the deer enclosure, the deer area has now been separated from the visitor area. In 1968 a mini golf course was built. The inn was renovated in 2000 and has been run by a restaurateur from Bad Homburg since April 2000.

Today the Hirschgarten - as the final stop of bus lines 1 and 11 easily accessible by public transport - is a popular local recreation area for Bad Homburg and the Rhine-Main area . The eponymous enclosure includes a number of deer species as well as goats. In addition to the mini golf course, the HirschGarten restaurant is a particular destination for many visitors. A few hundred meters below the road to the Hirschgarten there is also an open forest clearing that is approved for barbecuing. The Forellengut with its associated restaurant is also within walking distance .
