Kharkov Historical-Philological Society

The Historical and Philological Society Kharkov ( Ukrainian Харківське історико-філологічне товариство / Charkiwske istoryko-filolohitschne towarystwo ;. Scientific Charkivs'ke istoryko-filolohične tovarystvo ) was in 1886 by leading professors at the University to Kharkov (Kharkiv) in the former Russian Empire founded.

Aim of the society The aim was the exploration of the left bank Ukraine and the Sloboda-Ukraine with in-depth educational and cultural work.

The society organized archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, which it described in its various publication series (Sbornik, Trudy, Westnik).

After the establishment of Soviet power in Kharkov, it dissolved in 1919. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, society began to revive.

1880, the Company established an archive of important documents from the time of the Cossacks - Hetmanate before 1782 and by the small Russian Collegium , an Ethnographic Museum and two libraries.

The Society's archive is now located in the Central State Historical Archives in Kiev (CDIAK; Central'nyj deržavnyj istoryčnyj archiv Ukrajiny u Kyjevi).
