Historical center of Shahrisabz is a UNESCO- listed World Heritage Site in the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan . The world heritage site includes the historic city center ( Schahrestan ) of the city of Shahrisabz (Persian Schahr-e Sabz ).

background

Shahrisabz, originally called Kesch, is a 2000 year old town that was the cultural and political center of the Kesch region in the 14th and 15th centuries. Timur was born here and wanted to develop Kesch instead of Samarqand into the capital of his empire. He had buildings erected, some of which were monumental in size. The historical center of Shakhrisabz testifies to the development of the city and centuries of its history, especially from the times of Timur and the Timurids in the 15th and 16th centuries.

registration

The historic center of Shahrisabz was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the third World Heritage Site in Uzbekistan in 2000 based on a resolution of the 24th session of the World Heritage Committee .

The World Heritage Site covers an area of 240 hectares and is surrounded by an 82 hectare buffer zone. The border of the protected area essentially follows the medieval city wall.

The reason for the entry states, among other things:

Inside the medieval walls there is a collection of extraordinary monuments and ancient quarters, parts of which still remain. The historical center of Shahrisabz bears witness to the secular development of the city and centuries of its history, especially from the time of Timur and the Timurids in the 15th century. Despite the ravages of time, the remains are still impressive in the harmony and power of the styles, enriching the architectural heritage of Central Asia and the Islamic world.

The entry was made on the basis of criteria (iii) and (iv).

(iii): Shahrisabz contains many beautiful architectural monuments, especially those from the Timurid period, which was of great cultural and political importance in medieval Central Asia.

(iv): The buildings of Shakhrisyabz, particularly the Oq Saroy Palace and Timur's Tomb, are outstanding examples of a style that has greatly influenced the architecture of this region.

Danger

In its 40th meeting in 2016, the World Heritage Committee decided to include the historic center of Shahrisabz on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger.

One of the reasons given is that the tourist infrastructure on the site is overdeveloped. The destruction of buildings in the middle of the medieval quarter and the construction of modern facilities, including hotels and other buildings, had caused irreversible changes in the appearance of the historical center of Shahrisabz.
