According to the Naturschutzbund Deutschland , the biggest problems in the areas of West Tian Shan are overgrazing , resource depletion and further infrastructure expansion, as well as climate change.

Protected areas

The world heritage site comprises thirteen areas, including seven in Kazakhstan , four in Kyrgyzstan and two in Uzbekistan . These have a total protection area of around 500,000 hectares (ha). For some, only the area itself is part of the world heritage, others are surrounded by a buffer zone with a reduced protective effect. The areas comprise existing nature reserves or national parks or one or more parts of them. Most of the areas are close to the area where the three states border each other.
