Tamgaly is a location with petroglyphs in the Chu-Ili Mountains , 120 km northwest of the city of Almaty (Alma-Ata) in eastern Kazakhstan .
About 5,000 rock carvings were discovered there in a total of 48 groups that belong to the Middle and Late Bronze Age , earlier nomadic epochs and the Turkish period. They date from the second half of the second millennium BC to the beginning of the 20th century. There are also a large number of ancient graves , cult sites and probably altars .
In addition to depictions of people, including "sun people", there are mainly (mythological) animal drawings (including horses , camels , wolves , deer , ibexes and bulls ).
Since 2004, 900 hectares of Tamgaly have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (plus 2900 hectares of buffer zone ).
