founding

The decision to found the Historische Gesellschaft eV arose in the advisory board of the Cologne House and Landowners Association from 1888, chaired by Hanns Schaefer, who had already dealt with the topic several times at the time. He proposed the then Lord Mayor of Cologne, Norbert Burger , as president of the new company, who accepted the post and accompanied work on Cologne's city history in his last years in office. After Harry Blum and Fritz Schramma , who was already a member of the Historical Society Cologne e. V., the mayor Jürgen Roters and the mayor Henriette Reker took over the presidency in 2009 . The chairmanship of the Historical Society Cologne e. V. was given to Pastor Winfried Hamelbeck († September 23, 2015). In 2013 the chairmanship passed to Prof. Jürgen Wilhelm.

At the beginning Hugo Stehkämper worked as a scientific editor of the Cologne city history. He managed to find the appropriate experts for the individual epochs and to commit them to the publication of the individual volumes. In 2008 Werner Eck took over from Hugo Stehkämper.
