Hugo Stehkämper

Hugo Stehkämper (born April 5, 1929 in Gelsenkirchen , † June 11, 2010 in Cologne ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1969 to 1994 he was the director of the historical archive of the city of Cologne .

Life

Stehkämper studied Latin and history in Bonn , Munich and Münster . After receiving his doctorate in 1954 at the University of Münster with an investigation into the political activities of Bishop Hermann II of Münster , he attended the archive school in Marburg from 1957 to 1959 , where he passed the examination for the higher archive service. He began his professional career in 1959 at the North Rhine-Westphalian State Archive in Münster and in 1961 moved to the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne, which he took over in 1969. In 1971, under his leadership, the company moved to the newly built archive building on Severinstrasse . In 1994 he retired.

In 1970 he was elected a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . After 1985 he was chairman of the general association of German history and antiquity associations .

After his retirement he was hired by the Historical Society of Cologne as the editor of the thirteen-volume history of the city of Cologne and as the author of the third volume of Cologne in the High Middle Ages , which, however, was not yet completed when he died in 2010 at the age of 81. He had already given the editor of the series to Werner Eck during his lifetime .
