Horst Matzerath

Horst Matzerath (born May 18, 1937 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German historian.

Life

Matzerath studied history, German and political science in Cologne , Leuven and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1970 on National Socialism and local self-government . In Berlin he was initially a research assistant at the municipal science research center, now the German Institute for Urban Studies , then a research assistant and assistant professor at the Free University of Berlin , where he worked at the Institute for Economic and Social History and at the same time in an interdisciplinary research project "Historical Modernization Research". In this area he completed his habilitation in the early 1980s ( The Urbanization in Prussia 1815-1914 ). Since 1980 he has been working on setting up the NS documentation in Cologne.

From 1988 until his retirement in 2002 he was the first director of the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne in the EL-DE house . In the same year he received the culture award of the city of Cologne. Matzerath is a board member of the Cologne Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation e. V.

He is also active as an author. In October 2009, a thirteen-volume Cologne city's history appeared as the twelfth band Cologne in the era of National Socialism from 1933 to 1945 in Greven Verlag Köln , published by the Historical Society of Cologne e. V.
